Counselling for People Pleasing
near Pitt Meadows
Support for boundaries, over-functioning, self-trust, and the exhaustion of always putting everyone else first.
When Keeping Everyone Happy Starts Costing You
People pleasing can look caring, capable, and generous from the outside. But inside, it can feel exhausting to constantly manage other people’s feelings, avoid conflict, and say yes when you are already stretched thin.
Maybe you feel responsible for keeping the peace. Maybe you worry that saying no will disappoint someone, upset them, or change how they see you. Over time, this can leave you disconnected from your own needs, preferences, and limits.Therapy Can Help You Notice the Patterns Beneath the Yes
People pleasing is not about being “too nice.” It is often a pattern that developed for a reason. You may have learned to stay agreeable, helpful, quiet, or easygoing because it helped you feel safe, accepted, or needed.
Here are some common experiences we support in counselling:
-
You may agree to things automatically, then feel resentful, overwhelmed, or drained afterward.
-
You might monitor moods, soften your needs, or try to fix discomfort before anyone asks you to.
-
You may carry more than your share, anticipate everyone’s needs, or feel guilty when you stop doing so much.
-
Setting boundaries can feel risky when part of you worries it will lead to rejection, conflict, or being misunderstood.
-
After years of prioritizing others, it can be hard to know what you feel, need, prefer, or believe.
-
Always being strong, available, and easy to rely on can slowly wear down your energy and sense of self.
We support clients in Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, and across BC who are ready to understand people pleasing with compassion and begin building a more honest relationship with themselves.
You Are Allowed to Have Needs Too
One of the most common things people say when they start counselling for people pleasing is some version of, “I do not even know what I want anymore.”
You might be used to checking in with everyone else first. What do they need? Will they be upset? Should you help? Is it easier to just say yes? Before long, your own needs may feel blurry, inconvenient, or selfish.
People pleasing often comes with deep guilt. Even when you know a boundary is reasonable, your body might react as if you are doing something wrong. You may feel anxious, tense, or tempted to take it back just to restore peace.
Counselling can help you slow down and understand where these patterns came from. Together, we can explore boundaries, self-trust, guilt, relationship dynamics, and the parts of you that learned love or safety had to be earned by over-giving.
You do not have to become harsh or uncaring to stop people pleasing. You can stay compassionate while learning to include yourself too.

Your first session is mostly about getting to know you. We will talk about what has been feeling hard, what life looks like right now, and what you are hoping might feel different. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin.
Individual therapy is shaped around your needs. Some sessions may focus on anxiety, depression, stress, relationship patterns, career pressure, life transitions, or the parts of yourself you have had to ignore in order to keep going.
Together, we can explore what is happening beneath the surface and what kind of support feels realistic for your life. This might include emotional processing, coping tools, boundary work, self-compassion, or understanding patterns that keep repeating.
