Counselling for Women
What Brings Women to Therapy
Emotional
Running on empty while still trying to be everything for everyone. Feeling guilty for needing a break. Not knowing how to stop.
Relationships
Feeling disconnected from your partner, carrying more than your share, struggling with boundaries, or repeating patterns you cannot seem to break.
Overwhelm
Constantly thinking about what you said, what you should have said, and what everyone thinks of you. A mind that will not switch off.
Transition
Navigating big changes & becoming a mother, leaving a relationship, career changes, grief, or simply feeling like you have lost track of who you are.
Do You Feel Selfish When You Do Something For Yourself?
You are managing a lot. Work, relationships, family, keeping track of everything for everyone. And you are doing it. From the outside it probably looks fine.
But something is off. Maybe you are tired in a way that sleep can’t help with. Maybe you feel anxious a lot and you are not sure why. Maybe you are snapping at the people you love and then feeling bad about it. Maybe you have been putting everyone else first for so long that you do not know what you want anymore.
A lot of women come to therapy not because something big happened, but because they have been ignoring their own needs for a long time and it has caught up with them. They feel stuck, flat, or like they are just going through the motions.
You do not need to be in crisis to come to therapy. You just need to feel like things could be better and want them to be.

Looking for Therapy for Burnout or Anxiety? Support for Women
The pressure to be on top of everything and make it look easy. The guilt that comes with having needs. The way your sense of self can shift when you become a mother or go through a big relationship change. Doing more emotional work than the people around you and having no one notice.
These things affect how you feel about yourself, how you show up in your relationships, and what you think you are allowed to want.
Working with a therapist who understands this does not mean you need someone who only talks about being a woman. It means you do not have to spend your session time explaining the basics. You can get straight to what is actually going on.
What Gets Better When Women Get Counselling
Here's what tends to change:
You stop running on empty and start knowing what you actually need
The anxiety quiets down enough that you can think clearly again
You set limits with people without the guilt spiral that used to follow
You feel more like yourself, not the version that is managing everything, but the actual you
Relationships feel more equal and less draining
You can ask for help without feeling like a burden
You stop being so hard on yourself for not doing it all perfectly
You know what you want and you feel like you are allowed to want it
What Happens in Attachment Counselling at Serenity Counselling
Your first session is a conversation. We want to understand what is going on for you, what has brought you in, and what you are hoping to get from therapy. You do not need to have a clear answer to any of that. A lot of women come in knowing something is wrong but not exactly what. That is fine, figuring it out together is part of the work.
We work with a range of approaches depending on what you need. For anxiety, overthinking, and day-to-day patterns, we use practical tools that help you understand and change what is happening. For things that go deeper - trauma, long-standing beliefs about yourself, experiences that are hard to just think your way through, we use EMDR and Brainspotting, which help your brain process experiences at a level that talk therapy alone often cannot reach.
We also offer postpartum and pregnancy counselling for women going through that stage of life.
We offer in-person sessions in Port Coquitlam and online therapy anywhere in British Columbia.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
"I just feel off" is one of the most common reasons women come to therapy, and it is enough. You do not need a diagnosis, a dramatic event, or a specific problem to name. A lot of women come in knowing something is not right but not being able to say exactly what it is. Getting clear on that is often part of the first few sessions. You do not need to have it figured out before you come in.
-
Yes. This is something a lot of women say when they first come to therapy - they have spent a long time telling themselves they should be able to manage. Needing support is not a sign you have failed. It is a sign you are paying attention to what you actually need, which takes courage, especially when you are used to being the one other people rely on. Therapy is not for people who cannot cope. It is for people who want to understand themselves better and feel less stuck.

Regular therapy can be great. But there are things that show up specifically for women that are worth naming directly ,the pressure to do everything and make it look easy, the guilt around having needs, how identity shifts through motherhood or relationship changes, the weight of being everyone's emotional support. Working with a therapist who already understands that context means the session time can go to what actually matters, instead of spending it explaining the basics.

Women come to Serenity Counselling for many different reasons , anxiety, burnout, relationship stress, low self-esteem, perfectionism, people pleasing, postpartum struggles, life transitions, grief, trauma, and more. There is no threshold you have to meet. If something is affecting your quality of life and you want it to be different, that is reason enough.

The guilt you feel about taking time for yourself is actually one of the things therapy helps with. A lot of mothers are running on empty and cannot fully show up for their kids or their relationships because they have been neglecting their own needs for so long. Looking after yourself is not selfish - it affects everyone around you. But we also know that just saying that does not make the guilt go away. That is something we work through in therapy, not around it.
-
Yes. The mental load, the invisible work of tracking, planning, and managing everything for everyone - is real and it is exhausting. Therapy can help you understand why it is hard to put things down, what gets in the way of asking for more help, and how to have the conversations that might actually change the dynamic. It can also help with the resentment that builds up when you feel like you are doing it alone, which is often what brings women in.
-
Yes. Long-term anxiety can absolutely get better with the right support. Anxiety that has been there your whole life usually has roots - experiences, beliefs, and patterns that started early and have been there ever since. Therapy helps you figure out what those roots are and work on them directly. A lot of women who have always been anxious find that with the right therapy, it becomes much more manageable. It does not have to just be something you live with.
-
Yes. Life transitions like divorce, separation, or major relationship changes are some of the most common reasons women come to therapy. These are times when your sense of identity, safety, and future can all feel uncertain at once. Our therapists work with women navigating exactly these kinds of changes - helping you process what has happened, figure out what you want next, and feel more stable while things are shifting.

Yes. We offer online therapy to anyone in British Columbia. A lot of women find virtual sessions easier to fit into their lives , no commute, no childcare to arrange, sessions from wherever you are. Virtual therapy works just as well as in-person for most people and for most issues. If you are not sure which is right for you, we can talk about that in the free consultation.
