EMDR Works for More Than “Big Trauma”

What is EMDR good for?
EMDR can help with big scary events, but it might also help with everyday struggles that keep you feeling stuck.

What kinds of things might EMDR help with?

  • Beliefs that what you say doesn't matter

  • Beliefs that you have to are unlovable or unlikeable

  • Having trouble saying “no” to people

  • Feeling like you always have to make others happy

Think of it this way: It's like clearing a clogged drain so water can flow freely instead of backing up and making a mess.

Other areas where EMDR might help:

  • Feeling anxious when you have to make decisions

  • Shying away from dating because it’s too scary to trust others

  • Feeling guilty when you try to set boundaries

  • Being scared of disappointing people

  • Not trusting yourself to make good choices

How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?

  • You don't always have to spend months talking through every detail

  • EMDR works with your brain to process stuck thoughts and feelings

  • Some people notice changes fairly quickly, though everyone is different

  • Your brain and body do a lot of the work to create helpful changes

What should I expect?

Your therapist will explain everything before you start

  1. You'll work at your own pace, there's no rush

  2. Some sessions might feel intense, others might feel calm

  3. You might notice changes between sessions or it might take time

  4. Your therapist will check in with you regularly about how you're feeling in & out of session

EMDR helps you work through beliefs that aren't helping you anymore. This could help you think more clearly and feel more confident about your decisions.

About Serenity Counselling

"Everybody deserves to feel confident, calm, and fully themselves."

Deep down, you know what it feels like to want a life where you can trust yourself, set boundaries, and feel good in your own skin, but something often gets in the way. Many first-generation BIPOC women find themselves stuck in patterns of anxiety, cultural guilt, or perfectionism, leaving them exhausted and questioning their worth. How we spend our days is how we spend our lives. With the right support, we believe everyone can feel strong, confident, and capable of creating a life they love.

At Serenity Counselling, we specialize in beyond-talk therapy. Using EMDR, Brainspotting, and somatic approaches, we help you release stress and trauma stored in your body, not just your mind. These evidence-based therapies help you feel relief faster, shift old patterns, and build lasting confidence from the inside out.

Our Approach

  • Human – We're real people who understand your struggles and create a space where you can be yourself without judgment.

  • Encouraging – Providing you with awareness, warmth, discovery, and the tools for responsible choices and self-determination

At Serenity Counselling, we guide you toward real change, inner strength, and the life you've imagined for yourself, combining mind and body work to help you truly thrive without having to choose between your culture and your freedom.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic technique that helps individuals access and process deep-seated emotional and traumatic experiences. By guiding eye movements to specific "brainspots" related to distress, the therapy aims to unlock and release unresolved trauma stored in the brain. During a Brainspotting session, I help you explore and identify the precise areas in your visual field that connect with your emotional experiences. By focusing attention on these spots, you can access and process underlying emotions and memories more effectively.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a form of therapy that helps those experiencing symptoms of emotional distress relating to life traumas. This highly researched intervention helps those who feel “stuck” in their trauma by creating distance from these events and minimizing symptoms. EMDR uses detailed protocols and guided eye movement to help remove mental blocks that limit us from healing. This powerful eight-part therapy can help activate natural healing and be adapted to your needs.
