What Do I Talk About In Therapy?

Are you noticing something is “a little off” in your life and want to enter therapy, but you’re not sure what to discuss? This is something that I often hear from clients, and this may take some time to figure out. To start the brainstorming, here are five themes that are often discussed in sessions:

1) Meaningful relationships: these are relationships from the past, present and future. Many clients are eager to discuss childhood relationships, where other’s want to discuss a recent breakup. By taking a look at how we interact and are impacted by relationships, this can help us gain insight into patterns and healthy behaviours.

2) Stress: this is a big one. We may be experiencing it from many different angles, work, school, family and everything in between. Therapy is not just a place to “unload” this stress but also a space to notice how we can develop sustainable habits as stress is a constant in life.

3) Life transition: Graduating, having a child, moving, these are all factors that have impacts on us. Having a space to talk about complex emotions can be beneficial in feeling as if we aren’t losing control and are grounded in the present.

4) Grief & Loss: In the traditional sense we think of this as a loved one passing away. Grief and loss can show up in many different ways in our lives and can be intertwined with trauma. This can relate to changes within our body, family systems, or employment. Grief and loss is complex and can be linked to many different events.

5) Self care: Creating a consistent and balanced self care routine is the basis of positive wellbeing. Self care is holistic and encompasses elements that include physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual, financial, and social components.

If you would like to keep the brainstorming going, I would love to connect and explore further.
